St. Louis is the easiest drawing in this catalog to recognise from across a room, and it is the one where the single-line technique earns the most. The arch is drawn in one continuous sweep, which is exactly what the real thing is.
What is in the drawing
A slab with a notched top opens the left, and a church spire stands beside it above two smaller pointed towers. Then the arch springs from the base line, climbs in one unbroken curve past everything around it and comes down again on the far side, spanning a low block whose front is drawn as a run of small peaks. Immediately beyond its right leg a domed building rises, ribbed under a lantern and a fine point, standing over a row of shallow gabled roofs that run along the base. The right end closes on two tall towers, the nearer one plain and the further one capped with a soft curve.
Mug or canvas
At 2.161 to 1 it sits just past the mug band and wraps with barely anything to spare. Coverage is 0.089, but the arch itself is two thin strokes enclosing a large empty span, so the density is really in the buildings on either side. That empty span is the argument for going large: at mug size the arch reads as a shape, and at 30 by 20 it reads as a structure with daylight through it.
